Igari Soya, the member in charge of the creative aspects of HiHi Jets which includes the choreography and songwriting along with the rap parts making sure to use the group's ultimate weapon, roller skating. Today, as we set him up surrounded by books, he opened one and brought his face closer; he looked at us and said happily “it smells super good!” There is no doubt that his sensitivity and his well-honed language skills are taking roots during his reading experience that he has loved from an early age.

“When I was in primary school, I read the book series Our Seven-Day War written by Osamu Soda. I was very fond of Osamu’s easy-to-understand, juvenile yet intellectual way of writing and I think that I have probably been influenced by his works. Do you perhaps know the fantasy vampire novel Darren Shan ? Through this series, I not only learned foreign and fashionable turns of phrase but also jokes that I could re-use myself. I feel grateful I’m into reading when I realize that I understand the heart of the words. Like, for example, it might be a bad analogy but if I was told that I was dumb, I would digest these words by wondering what about my attitude was dumb. On the contrary, if I were to only understand the surface of the language, I feel like my answer would be “Huh? But if I study, it should be okay though?’’. A person who takes the words damn too straightforwardly is another member from my group named Hashimoto Ryo and also my younger brother (laughs)”

Recently, he started reading Pinball, 1973 written by Haruki Murakami and told us that it was a refined piece of work and he was drawn in by the appearance of the world. Through reading, he accumulated an amount of words and started writing the lyrics as an output, though he revealed that his writing style is different when he writes his own solo lyrics and the group’s lyrics.

“When I imagined the rap parts of “Baby Gone” and “MinaMina Summer”, I wrote them so I could create a story while making sure to include performance aspects so we could look cool. However, as for the solo songs “Fence” and the one I performed at “Summer Paradise 2020”, those songs were written with the ideals of how strong I aim to be.  First of all, you need to evaluate your own weaknesses and limits to write. We live in a world in which the results might not immediately come no matter how hard we try, so we need to take a moment to accurately evaluate yourself and in my opinion, as long as you are in the position of providing content to other people,  wouldn’t it be bad if we couldn’t even overcome our lowest hurdle? This is why I think that I have such high self-esteem…….. Though sometimes I dare to tell myself these kinds of things to encourage myself. (laughs)”

Having high self-esteem is important for the fans of the same age, “but there is no way I would force my ego on the fans” he comments with a soft voice.

“I don’t want to become a leader that everyone is looking up to. Obviously, it’s more than necessary to love myself…. but wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could do the same….? That’s just how I feel though (laughs)? Above everything, my first wish is to be able to produce a great performance. I want people to enjoy HiHi Jets the same way they would enjoy a movie or a game. Because people are spending their money on me, I don’t want them to be disappointed.”

On the other hand, the boy is looking to develop his own choreography style.

“Rather than imagining something and creating something as a whole, I often try to think while watching the other members dancing. Well since I usually do some free dance rather than basing the choreography on basic and theoretical stuff, when I look at myself dancing I get feelings like ‘the hell was this lame move?’ (laughs). Since I’ve been thinking how I want to create my own choreography for a long time now, I accumulated a lot of different ideas, and I feel like once I run out of ideas, it’s going to be tough for me to imagine new ones.”

He wants to make the group even stronger while truly cherishing it.

When he went through the interview he was in the middle of preparing for Summer Paradise 2020. Igari was the one who took leadership of the whole composition and said that because it’s a live viewing, he wanted to make sure that they would deliver fun to the audience that they couldn’t see anywhere else.

“Our lives are entirely based on integrating the audience into our performances, and because these were live streamings, it would have been tough to make them feel included. As for this time, we made the most of this situation, as the lives turned into live-streams, we tried to make sure to keep the excitement as normal ones. Some people may watch us while eating or talking so I wanted to take that into consideration while making the concert, including even the movements of the camera. It's not that I was trying to take the easy way out with making this, I just want people to purely enjoy our content. It would definitely be great if our fans could have the best time of their lives watching.”

From the conversation as a whole we could really feel how the boys examine their activities with a bird's-eye view/consider their activities within the bigger picture, we even completely forgot about the fact we were talking to a 17-year-old boy. Now, we started wondering what makes the other members have complete trust in him, the embodiment of talent.

“The members trust me as much as I trust them. Everyone in the group seems to think that I will take the songwriting and the choreography seriously, so I believe this is why they leave it to me. Everyone in the group feels that if HiHi JETS wasn’t the five of us, we would have quit a long time ago, and because everyone felt that way too, I told Johnny-san about it. I'm not saying something cheesy like "I love you so much, I want to be with you forever" like you might say in a relationship, rather I want to be with my group because there is no better place in the world to make my dreams come true. I believe it’s a miracle to be in this group and to have met people who share the same feeling as me. Lots of things happened in the group but each time, it confirmed our intentions and feelings. That’s why I can say that our mutual trust is at max level now. ”

As he is able to walk toward his dream with his comrades, Igari comments “I think I’m incredibly lucky to be able to consider these guys as my friends and have fun with them on top of that.”

“Fights that could’ve led us to disband ? We indeed had massive fights in the past. For example Yuuto and me, Hashimocchan and me but also Hashimocchan and Yuuto. While the three of us had lots of fights, I don’t think Mizuki-kun and Sakuma had many. Those two aren’t the type to quarrel but I do think they had their own issues at some point. I think the reason we stopped fighting is that we all grew up (laughs). Also I think that we’ve come to understand each other’s feelings well. Yuuto was very close to Johnny-san so I guess that if he ever wanted to be in a new group,  he was in the position to make that request, but he never did. I suppose this is because he really trusted us (the members) and we were a reassuring and reliable place  he could go back to.  Sakuma is the person who understands me and what I create the most, Hashimoto is the type of person who’s easy to mess with yet he has a very strong sense of ethics and believes in himself. Mizuki is a person that has been with me for a long time and I respect him a lot. HiHi JETS’ relationship is like a family yet different, I think our relationship is indescribable. But what I can say about these guys is that I want them to stay in my life as long as possible.”

In the movie “Oretachi ouenya”, he appears as a high school boy who needs support. We asked him about how he dealt with acting as a delicate boy who is worried about his future and hometown.

“The character I’m playing is a boy who is kinda difficult so it was a very fulfilling role. The movie is also very emotional so it is a very interesting one. While it was very fun to play with my own emotions and feelings, if I ever have to continue my career as an actor it would be ideal to be picked for third- and fourth-string roles. I’m not saying this to be humble or because I think poorly of myself but I think that rather than playing leading roles, I feel more attracted to supporting roles. I hope that if I make quick but striking appearances in dramas and movies, people watching could be like “who is that child?!” after seeing me and maybe becoming more interested in HiHi Jets.”

No matter how much he is asked about his personal activities, he always finds a way to think about HiHi Jets.

“How does a group get stronger and bigger ? I’m always thinking about that, I really want us to grow even more powerful. No matter how hard I work on my personal activities, this thought will always be at the front of my mind. From now on, there is this place I can always go back to the place named HiHi Jets; I want to treasure this place that feels like Home and fight for it.”
